Caring for the homeless

The lockdowns across Mongolia from the end of January 2020 have not only had a devastating impact upon the economy, but also in the lives of countless Mongolians who have been forced out of their apartments and are now living on the streets. An aid organisation who has been working with the homeless for a number of years, estimates over 5000 people living on the streets in the capital alone. They are struggling to cope with the demand, and recently asked Mongol Khalamj to assist by taking responsibility for those living in the Bazurk district.

Although we are unsure when current restrictions will be lifted, we want to be prepared so we can provide meals for the homeless, as well as giving them the opportunity to have a shower at least once a week and wash their clothes.

Our initial plans are to lease a one room ground floor apartment in the neighbouring district for the purpose of preparing the food, and for washing and showering. Ideally we need to purchase a van, but will initially rent one as needed to collect supplies, distribute food, and pro-vide medical attention. We are so thankful that Otgaa has already had several offers of support from volunteers with skills to serve in cooking, delivering, washing and nursing. We want to ensure our current programmes in the prisons continue, so we need to raise additional funds to meet our estimated budget of

A$10,000 for the first year of this project. If this is an area you would like to assist us with, please consider donating today.
